Flask [realia] : Shield and Clasped Hands Flask 1860-1875

This quart-size glass flask features a large shield on its obverse side. This side also includes narrow molding, a shallow ogival top, and ogival sides with a point at the meeting of the upper and lower fields. The upper field of the shield has narrow horizontal bars. Clasped hands are featured in the upper field, and the hands include the cuff and part of the sleeve at the ends. The lower fields have seven broad, flat bars of graduated lengths, broken by oblong, narrow molding. At each side of the shield is a slender laurel branch. Above the shield are thirteen stars, eleven of which are in shallow arc above the arced inscription "Waterford". On the reverse side is a flying eagle facing to the right, featuring a breast shield with an ogival top. An olive branch is positioned to the left of the eagle and three thunderbolts are positioned to the right. Two rippled pennants are in the eagle's beak flying in a long shallow s-curve above and below the eagle. Below the eagle is a round-ended frame with a shallow ogival top and a bottom with narrow molding. The flask has a long body with smooth edges and a long curving shoulder. The neck of the flask is tooled and broad with a flat vertical collar. The base has a smooth concave center.
